Seahawks’ Sherman: Focus on fundamentals and good things will happen

Richard Sherman, the Seattle Seahawks All-Pro cornerback, has been in the headlines this week following his on-air comments after the NFC Championship game.

Reaction to Sherman’s statement blew up on Twitter, then reaction to the reaction took over.

While talking heads and amateur experts discuss those merits, here’s a Richard Sherman video clip we can all agree on.

Sherman and Seahawks teammate Earl Thomas are two of 26 NFL players selected to the 2013 USA Football All-Fundamentals Team.

Both spoke about the award during a recent press conference, stressing the importance of developing fundamentals at all levels of the game.

“I think fundamentals are the most important part of the game,” Sherman said. “Without fundamentals, without a base of understanding of the game and understanding of your technique, you have nothing to fall back on with things get tough, when the game gets intense. … Having a great set of fundamentals allows you to play the game at a high level and consistently.”

“It just stressed the importance of the little things,” Thomas said. “You can take a lot from something so small like your technique and it turns into something really big – like a pick-six.

Each All-Fundamentals Team member receives a $1,500 equipment grant to distribute to the youth or high school program of his choice. A fan vote to select offensive, defensive and special teams captains will increase the grant award to $3,000 for captains.
